Insurance
All Swinburne students participating in overseas programs (including overseas exchanges, faculty-led study tours and overseas internships) must be covered by an adequate level of insurance for the entire duration of their time overseas.

If you are approved for a Swinburne Abroad program, you will be automatically covered by Swinburne's university insurance provider, Chubb from the date of your departure.
Swinburne's medical and travel insurance policy will cover you for the duration of the academic program, plus any other personal travel either side, for a maximum of 180 days (including travel days to/from Australia).

The academic program duration is your program start and finish dates as specified in your official acceptance documentation provided by Swinburne Abroad, the host university or third-party provider (depending on your program).

If your academic program duration exceeds 180 days (full-year exchange program), Swinburne Abroad may organise an extension of your insurance cover for up to 365 days maximum. Please contact Khoi if your program exceeds 180 days.

Please note some important features of this insurance below:

  • Insurance is provided by Chubb
  • Insurance includes an excess of $500 (excluding medical claims, where no excess is payable)
  • If you exceed 180 days, you will need to arrange further insurance coverage directly with Chubb and payment is at your own expense. Arrangement of this additional cover must be completed before you depart Australia.

Submitting Your Flight Itinerary (mandatory)
Once your flights are confirmed, you must submit your full itinerary to Swinburne using a separate form (accessible via the SwinAbroad student portal once you're in the pre-departure stage). This is important for insurance coverage and monitoring your arrival plans.

Exchange students must at least provide us with their departing flight information.

Policy FAQ
PLEASE NOTE: The Period of Insurance will state that it is valid for a certain period- however, be assured that you will be covered past this date automatically (for up to 180 days). Swinburne automatically renews the policy every year as part of a corporate membership but a 1 year date range is listed in case any of the terms of the insurance change year-to-year.

We will update the documents below after the insurance policy is renewed.

*If you require an insurance document with your name on it confirming your cover, email exchange@swin.edu.au.
Download the Chubb
Smart Travel app
Download the free Chubb Mobile app on your phone before you start your Exchange journey. With the Chubb Mobile app, you can track major events such as hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, hailstorms, and wildfires in the countries you plan on visiting, report a claim, and more. It has very helpful tips related to travel, risk, etc.

How to download and register on the app:

  1. Download the Chubb Smart Travel App from the Apple store or Google Play.
  2. Register to create an account.
  3. Add Swinburne’s policy number: 02PP016656
  4. Agree to both terms of use.
  5. Allow location setting while using app.
  6. Check your email to activate your account.

Extend your Cover
Swinburne will cover you with comprehensive travel and medical insurance for up to 180 days overseas.

If you are undertaking a program that spans more than 180 days, please contact Swinburne Abroad- approved programs for longer than 180 days will be eligible for a personalised extended policy. Note that the policy cannot be extended for over 365 days. Ensure your travel dates are under 365 days.

If you are undertaking personal travel where you will exceed 180 days overseas, you will need to extend your cover through Chubb directly and pay any additional costs required.

You can purchase additional coverage using this link: https://uni.chubbtravelinsurance.com/swb

NOTE: When purchasing extra coverage to your trips for personal travel, you only need to choose the dates over 180 days which you require the additional cover for, rather than the dates of your entire trip.

Students are able to start their coverage halfway through their journey and mark the start of their trip as being in the country they are in rather than marking it as Australia.

Host University Insurance
Some host universities (especially in parts of Europe, and the USA) will require you to have additional medical insurance coverage to comply with the host universities' requirements and/or visa requirements of that country. This requirement is outside of Swinburne's control and you will have to purchase the additional insurance if this is instructed by your host university.

Medical coverage does not count as full comprehensive travel insurance. Your Swinburne University insurance will be your main form of coverage for the full duration of your trip.

How do I know which policy to claim under?
Often the insurance from your host university will be medical insurance ONLY. This might mean that for things like simple trips to the doctor or basic prescription medicine you aren't charged a fee- or that it's much cheaper. In this case, it might be easier to use your host university insurance for basic medical needs.
However if this isn't the case, or if you encounter bigger medical needs- your Swinburne Chubb insurance is a fully comprehensive policy. You just need to be aware that you'll need to pay in full for the service upfront, keep all of your invoices/receipts and then make an insurance claim at a later date.

For full details on how the insurance from your host country/university works, make sure to ask your host university directly.
