Insurance

All Swinburne students participating in overseas programs must be covered by an adequate level of insurance for the entire duration of their time overseas.

If you are approved for a Swinburne Abroad program, you will be automatically covered by Swinburne's university insurance provider, Chubb.
The insurance will cover you for the duration of the program and any other personal travel either side, for a maximum of 180 days (including travel days to/ from Australia).

The academic program duration is your program start and finish dates as specified in your official acceptance documentation provided by Swinburne Abroad, the host university or third-party provider (depending on your program). The academic program duration must not exceed 180 days.

Please note some important features of this insurance below:

  • Insurance is provided by Chubb
  • Insurance includes an excess of $500 (excluding medical claims, where no excess is payable)
  • If you exceed 180 days you will need to arrange further insurance coverage directly with Chubb and payment is at your own expense (if undertaking a study tour it will be probably be not the case). However, arrangement of this additional cover must be completed before you depart Australia.

Chubb Smart Travel App
Download the free Chubb Mobile app on your phone before you start your overseas experience. With the Chubb Mobile app, you can track major events such as hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, hailstorms, and wildfires in the countries you plan on visiting, report a claim, and more. 2. Register to create an account.
  3. Add Swinburne’s policy number: 02PP016656
  4. Agree to both terms of use.
  5. Allow location setting while using app.
  6. Check your email to activate your account.
Making a Claim

You'll need to go directly through the insurer, Chubb, to make a claim.

Click on the 'Chubb Claims Process' link above and follow the steps to submit your claim. Make sure you have copies of all of your documents, receipts or any other important supporting documentation ready to support your claim.

Note: There is a $500 excess payable for all claims (excluding medical claims, where no excess is payable).
Extend your Cover
Swinburne will cover you with comprehensive travel and medical insurance for up to 180 days.

If you are undertaking a program that spans more than 180 days, please contact Swinburne Abroad- approved programs for longer than 180 days will be eligible for a personalised extended policy. Note that the policy cannot be extended for over 365 days. Ensure your travel dates are under 365 days.

If you are undertaking personal travel you will need to extend your cover through Chubb directly and pay any additional costs required. You can purchase additional coverage through this link: https://uni.chubbtravelinsurance.com/swb or contact Chubb via travel.au@chubb.com.

NOTE: When purchasing extra coverage to your trips for personal travel, you need to choose only the dates over 180 days which you require the additional cover for, rather than the dates of your entire trip.

Students are able to start their coverage halfway through their journey and mark the start of their trip as being in the country they are in rather than marking it as Australia.
