Step 1

The loan amount (as at 2025) you wish to request:

If you are doing Asian language study in preparation for your study in Asia, do you wish to apply for the additional $1,314 language loan? (2025)

*You will need to provide proof of enrolment or proof of application for admissions to the language course with this application to exchange@swin.edu.au (if a language component is NOT already included as part of your exchange program)

NOTE: Language studies taken as a part of a course of study leading to a higher education award in respect for which the student is Commonwealth supported (for credit) are not eligible for the additional language loan.

Step 2

Please complete the online OS-HELP Government Assistance form via 'My Swinburne'. Steps on how to submit the GAF:

Login to 'My Swinburne' with your SIMS Username and password
Select the 'My Study' tile.
Select the Government Assistance tab on left-hand side.
Click the ‘Add+’ button on the top right to access forms you are eligible for.
Submit the OS HELP GAF labelled ‘Apply for a loan if you're completing part of your course overseas’.
Complete the required details including your Tax File Number .
Click Submit. A success message will appear.

Step 3

Update your banking details via 'My Swinburne' to receive payment.

Login to 'My Swinburne' with your SIMS Username and password.
Select the 'My Finances' tile.
Select the Preferences tab on the left-hand side.
Choose Preferred Payment as ‘Electronic Funds Transfer’
Choose ‘BSB’ for Bank Transfer Method
Update your banking details (with NO dashes (-) on your account number).
Click Save to submit your changes.

Step 4

Please confirm you meet the following requirements:

Will have already completed at least 1 EFTSL (100 CP) at the commencement of your intended overseas study period

(please note loans cannot be paid until you have completed this)

Will have at least 0.125 EFTSL (usually 1 unit) remaining on your return to Swinburne after completing your overseas exchange program

You are an Australian citizen; or a permanent humanitarian visa holder; or a New Zealand Special Visa (SCV) holder; who meets the residency requirements and who will be resident in Australia at the time of applying

You are enrolled in an undergraduate or CSP postgraduate course of study

You will be enrolled full-time during your overseas exchange semester in the equivalent of at least 37.5 credit points for a semester exchange program; or at least 12.5 credit points for a short-term exchange program; or for a study abroad program that will receive exemptions upon return equivalent to 37.5 credit points or greater per semester

You are receiving academic credit at Swinburne

You have not received an OS HELP loan on more than one other occasion from Swinburne, or another university provider

Please note: OS HELP Loans must be paid 6 months apart and you cannot receive more than two OS HELP loans in your lifetime.

You have submitted the OS HELP Government Assistance Form via My Swinburne

Have a valid tax file number (TFN) at the time of applying

I have read the OS-HELP Statement of terms and conditions

From 1 January 2021 have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) before your application

You have updated your banking details in ‘My Finances'

Students must meet all OS-HELP Loan requirements and unless all steps have been completed, your OS HELP Loan cannot be processed and payment will not be made.

Note that the OS-HELP Loan amount you choose cannot be changed once payment has been processed. Once processed, this will count as 1 loan.
