SWINBURNE OVERSEAS INTERNSHIP
TERMS AND CONDITIONS


By reading this information and acknowledging in your acceptance form, you are hereby agreeing to accept a place in Swinburne Abroad’s Overseas Internship Program (the “Program”) organised by Swinburne University of Technology (“Swinburne”) on the following terms and conditions: 

1. Expenses

I agree to pay all expenses associated with my participation in the Program, including but not limited to: 

  • Applicable tuition fees, plus the SUT General Service Fee; all fees will be at the rate being charged by SUT in the semester in which the Program commences. These fees must be paid by the date specified by SUT;
  • Program fees as determined by the internship provider (if applicable);
  • Meals and personal spending;
  • All additional travel, visa, accommodation and living expenses associated with extra travel that I choose to take before or after the program;
  • All travel and health insurance costs (if not covered under Swinburne’s travel insurance policy) as well as medical and pharmaceutical expenses incurred for my benefit;
  • All costs resulting from the modification or termination of my participation in the Program. 

2. Visas

I agree that I am responsible for obtaining appropriate visa or entry documents prior to my departure in liaison with my internship provider (if applicable) if they provide such services.

3. Insurance & Medical Pre-departure Check

I understand that I am responsible for advising Swinburne Abroad, the Internship Provider (if applicable) and my Host Organisation of any pre-existing physical and/or psychological medical conditions which may require additional support prior to departure and whilst at the Host Organisation.

I agree that I am responsible for ensuring I am sufficiently covered by insurance (Swinburne or otherwise) that will provide me with travel, medical and health coverage, and cover me for any personal activities I undertake while overseas for the duration of my participation in the Program. I also accept responsibility for receiving all the necessary vaccinations recommended for entry into the ‘host’ country.

4. Swinburne Funds

I understand that Swinburne is not obliged to provide any funds to assist with the payment of any of the expenses referred to in Paragraphs 1, 2 and 3 of this form unless agreed to in writing by the parties. If Swinburne does provide funds for any expenses, I agree to repay those funds at Swinburne’s request if I do not complete the Program or if my participation in the Program is terminated for any reason. 

5. Disclosure of Personal Information

In accordance with Swinburne’s Information Privacy Policy, Confidentiality of Student Records Policy and associated enrolment declaration, I hereby consent to Swinburne releasing the following additional personal information about me in the following specific circumstances as is appropriate: 

  • If Swinburne believes the disclosure would assist in satisfying my immigration or visa requirements during the Program or otherwise facilitate my travel
  • If Swinburne believes the disclosure is required to enable or assist me to obtain funds. 

6. Acknowledgement, Release and Assumption of Risk

I understand that my participation in the Program will be at my sole risk and may result in injury or death. I acknowledge the obvious risks associated with my participation in the Program and I voluntarily choose to participate in the Program, fully accepting that such risks, should they arise, may cause personal injury or death. I release and do not hold Swinburne, its servants and agents accountable from and against all and any actions or claims which may be made by me or on my behalf or by other parties for or in respect of or arising out of any injury or death caused to me whether by negligence, breach of contract or in any way whatsoever, to the fullest extent permitted in law. 

7. Unforeseen Events

I understand that due to the international aspect of the Program, events beyond the control of Swinburne may occur including the outbreak of war, civil unrest or natural disasters and that these may require a modification or termination of my participation in the Program. I agree that Swinburne may modify or terminate my participation in the Program in these circumstances. 

8. Statutes, Rules and Regulations

I agree that whilst I am enrolled as a student of Swinburne that I am bound by the statutes, regulations, policies and procedures of Swinburne in force from time to time. I understand that failing to comply with these could result in the immediate termination of my participation in the Program. I agree to ensure that I am enrolled in the relevant International Study Program units.  

9. Ambassadorship

I acknowledge that being a representative and ambassador of Swinburne and Australia is an important part of the Program. I agree to conduct myself in a manner that will not offend either the laws of the host country or the cultural norms or behaviour pattern of the people of the host country. I agree that Swinburne may terminate my participation in the Program if I fail to maintain what Swinburne considers to be an acceptable standard of public and private conduct. 

10. Local Laws and Customs

I agree to respect and adhere to the laws and customs of the host country and my internship site and understand that the intentional violation or disrespect for those laws and customs may result in termination from the program. Furthermore, I acknowledge that the violation of such laws and customs may have legal ramifications with consequences beyond the control of Swinburne. 

11. Ongoing Obligations

On my return from the Program, I agree to assist Swinburne upon request, in: 

  • Updating information concerning the Program and activities
  • Preparing students participating in the Program for the following years
  • Orientation activities for the Program.


I agree that the information I have supplied to Swinburne is, to the best of my knowledge, complete and correct. I confirm that I have not provided forged or false information of my citizenship or immigration status and I have not allowed Swinburne to act upon information about my citizenship or immigration status that I know to be incorrect. I further consent to Swinburne obtaining my academic records from the appropriate educational institutions as may be necessary to ensure my placement in the Program.
